Lead Machine Learning & Intelligent Automation Engineer – Trudering-Riem (Germany) – Salary Up To €130,000
About the opportunity
We are working with a rapidly growing international software business that develops technology used by organisations operating complex, mission-critical infrastructure.
The business is undergoing significant investment in its data, machine learning and automation capabilities and is now looking for a Machine Learning Tech Lead to take ownership of the technical direction across these areas.
This is an opportunity for an experienced engineer to combine hands-on technical work with architectural ownership, mentoring and close collaboration with Product and Engineering teams.
The role
As the Tech Lead, you'll sit at the intersection of machine learning, intelligent automation and software product development.
You'll be responsible for shaping the technical approach to ML and automation initiatives, designing solutions and ensuring they progress from initial concept through to reliable production deployment.
You'll work closely with Product and Engineering to turn ideas into practical, customer-facing capabilities, balancing technical quality with the need to deliver quickly and create measurable value.
The ideal person will be comfortable operating in an environment where priorities evolve, problems aren't always clearly defined and engineers are expected to take ownership rather than simply work from a predefined backlog.
What you'll be doing
Lead the end-to-end development and delivery of machine learning and intelligent automation solutions, from initial scoping and architecture through to production.
Establish technical standards and best practices for building reliable, maintainable and responsible AI/ML systems.
Introduce appropriate testing, monitoring, observability and safeguards around production AI solutions.
Work closely with Product Managers and Engineering teams to integrate ML and automation capabilities into existing software products.
Evaluate new technologies and approaches, making pragmatic decisions around feasibility, scalability and technical trade-offs.
Identify manual or repetitive processes that could benefit from automation and turn them into robust, maintainable solutions.
Provide technical leadership and mentorship to less experienced ML engineers and data-focused team members.
Take ownership of technical decisions while remaining hands-on with development and delivery.
What we're looking for
We're looking for an experienced AI/ML engineer who has successfully taken solutions beyond experimentation and into production.
You'll ideally bring:
Proven experience designing and delivering machine learning or AI solutions that have generated tangible business value.
Strong experience moving ML solutions from prototype through to production.
Excellent Python skills and the ability to write clean, production-quality code.
Experience building reliable and maintainable automation solutions, scripts and pipelines.
A strong understanding of testing, monitoring, observability and reliability within AI/ML systems.
The ability to make sensible technical trade-offs between speed, quality and long-term maintainability.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with Product, Engineering and wider business stakeholders.
A proactive approach to problem-solving and ownership.
Nice to have
Previous technical leadership or team lead experience.
Experience mentoring junior engineers and helping develop technical capability within a team.
Experience delegating technical work and supporting engineers through delivery.
Experience working with intelligent automation or agentic AI.
Experience within a complex enterprise software environment.
Why consider it?
You'll have genuine ownership over the company's growing ML and intelligent automation capabilities, with the opportunity to influence architecture, engineering standards and how AI is brought into production.
It's a hands-on technical leadership position for someone who wants to build things, solve difficult problems and have a meaningful influence on the direction of an expanding AI/ML function.
